PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

EAT AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE & YOU WON'T GAIN AN OUNCE!

The rules are simple:

  • You must choose 10 foods (or dishes) which you will eat for the rest of your life
  • You don't have to worry about good nutrition
  • You don't have to worry about weight gain/loss
  • If you choose a complete dish then that is how you will always eat it, (you can't separate out the ingredients to make a different meal)
  • Choose carefully, this is forever...
  • Have fun.

My choices would be:
  • The best Ploughman's ever, really good homebaked bread, butter,  excellent cheese, pickle, pickled onion, crisp salad..
  • A creamy mushroom risotto
  • Chocolate concrete pudding (made just as they used to make it at school, way back in the dark ages) with lashings of custard
  • Slow roasted shallots, garlic and cherry tomatoes
  • Beautifully cooked seasonal vegetables/seaweed - asparagus, samphire, etc
  • A platter of  fruits - especially mango, blackcurrants, raspberries, really good heritage English apples, etc
  • Poached eggs on toast
  • A really good lemon pudding of some variety - sharp and refreshing
  • Fairtrade chocolate with orange and spices
  • Hmmn I'll have to think about this one

  1. Choices would be different tomorrow and were different yesterday but, maybe, for the moment:

    1. Bucket of steamed English "Winter" veggies with black pepper.
    2. Weetabix with soy milk hot or cold.
    3. Veggie-sausage & onion pie "my way" with peas &/or carrots &/or cabbage.
    4. Vegetable curry "my way" with boiled rice.
    5. Digestive biscuits & decent coffee (yes, it's a complete meal!).
    6. Baked spud with baked beans.
    7. Chip buttie (white bread, proper chips).
7a. Crisp sandwich, salt & vinegar flavour, whtie bread thin sliced.
    8. Fresh pineapple.
    9. Treacle tart with custard.
    10. Chunky toast and Marmite.
10a. Trough of salads, modern style, not seventies-style.

  2. I am sorry, you can't have twelve choices - and it is 'forever', that's what makes it really difficult. I'm still pondering on my tenth choice, chip butty could do it..

  3. Oh gosh, I have to do this, it's too fun. (as you probably can tell from my choices, I grew up with very different comfort foods!)

    1. Singapore Fried carrot cake
    2. My mum's 48 hr marinated soy sauce braised pork belly.
    3. My mum's cabbage/carrot/black fungus stirfry
    4. My mum's garlic spinach
    5. Biryani
    6. Roasted summer vegetables, mediterranean style (this one's the odd one out)
    7. Rendang (nonya curries)
    8. Hainanese chicken rice
    9. My mum's steamed cod
    10. All nonya kuehs

hmm, must it really be 10?

  4. Ooh I love this Elaine! Dessert Island Dishes (see what I did there?) I may 'borrow' this idea for a blog post, with a nod to you ofcourse, it's a lovely idea.

    Mine:
1: a roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings
    2: fennel and Pernod risotto
    3: my mums chocolate roulade
    4: my mums chopped liver
5: a good homemade White loaf
    6: chicken thighs with vegetables
7: a vegetable stir fry with Ho fun noodles
    8: my grandmas chicken soup
9: a Nepenthe burger and French fries
    10: seared tuna

And in the time honoured tradition of DID, may I add one book to go along with the food... Nigel Slater's The Kitchen Diaries

  5. Shu Han - Welcome! Your choices sound wonderful, I looked up the fried carrot cake, recipe and images, and it is totally different to what I expected, so I shall have great fun looking up your other choices. Thank you - and yes, only ten!

Dom - so glad you have joined in too. I came up with the idea round the family dinner table, about 15 years ago, and I still can't quite finalise my list - it's that forever bit which gets me - but you are welcome to borrow it. Now, I must go and look to see what a Nepenthe burger is...x
