PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Barbed Wire and Bennie

I was a little worried when Bennie didn't come home yesterday evening, but she has stayed out before, and we often wake to find an impressive array of rodent bodies outside the kitchen doors.

When she did finally come home I was horrified to see that one of her back legs was black with dried blood.  On examination it seems likely that she had got her leg caught in some vicious barbed wire.  How I hate that stuff.
She is resting at home now.  I'd like to think that she has learnt a lesson and won't return to wherever she got hurt.  Somehow I doubt it.

  1. Bennie is beautiful - I'm glad she is back with you. I hate barbed wire too. I have a very ugly 9" scar on the inside of my forearm thanks to barbed wire- I fell on it , and it literally peeled the skin back down my arm- no fancy plastic surgery back in the 70s either to make a nice job of fixing it :(

  2. Poor old beastie - maybe the rats have started building barricades?

  4. Hello Owl, rats building barricades with barbaric, barbed wire? I hope not!

  6. She looks as if she's learned her barb wire lesson. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

  7. It makes me weak in the knees to see an injured animal. I'm so glad to hear Bennie is doing OK.

  8. Aw bless her. Let's hope she has learnt her lesson.

  9. Barb wire can be a nasty injury. I've had a few myself. Also snagged a few sweaters on it too. Of course, here in Texas we use it for our cattle.

  10. Poor Bennie. It's nasty stuff and it tamed the American wild west.

  11. Jane, She was very distressed and reverted to semi-feral, but we got the wound clipped and cleaned. She was very good considering! She spent the day resting, sensible girl!

Joanne, I fear Bennie is one of those accident-prone cats. Very few weeks go by without her coming home with a limp on one or other of her legs. I hope that's her last tangle with wire though, it was really nasty.

Ms Sparrow, She is so much better this morning, she has even managed to have a play-fight with Sparky. It is amazing what cleaning a wound, TLC, plus 24 hours rest can do for a young cat. Thank goodness.

  12. LBM, I would love to think she has learnt her lesson. The barbed wire on the farms won't go away, the trouble is that when she is hunting she is focussed only on her prey!

Meggie, Our immediate vicinity is largely arable farming. However, we do have a trout farm and a fish pond across the road. These are protected, roadside, (from human thieves) with barbed wire. I can't blame the farmers for protecting their livelihoods. (I still hate the stuff though!)

Janet, A couple of weeks ago when I read the 1880 American Agriculturist Magazine I was very surprised at just how many varieties of barbed wire were on offer at that time! I am happy to say that Bennie is feeling lots better today. Now I need to find a way to hobble her!!

  13. Poor Bennie. I think you're right that she won't go back there, but I'm sure she'll find some other trouble to get into. I just read Scarlett's comment and it gave me the shivers.

  15. Hi Mitch, Bennie is one of those adventurous cats who does seem to have lots of mishaps. She is lots better today, although she has spent more time than normal resting. Scarlet's accident was awful, it made my feet hurt, but that is another story.

Hi Knatolee, She is much more relaxed when I examine her leg, so I guess it is not hurting so much today. She does seem to have a slight problem with eyesight, which probably impairs her judgement when jumping. I've tried talking to her, but she won't listen - insists on her freedom!!!

  16. Cats have minds of their own and good luck trying to control them! :)
