PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

The Toad, the Damselfly and the Owl

We were out walking with Harry when he gave a yell and crouched down, telling me excitedly about a baby toad he had spotted..  I could see nothing, but took his word (and better eyesight) for it.  I pointed the camera and took half a dozen photos of what looked like grass and ivy...but he was right, there was a beautiful little toad hidden deep in the grass.
A Tiny Toad
Well done Harry!
Damselfly
I spotted the blue flash of a damselfly and ...
was delighted to find I had captured this photograph of a little beauty.

We were just turning for home when we spotted a large bird flying around the meadow...I couldn't make out what it was, but I could guess... point, click, hope for the best...
Barn Owl
Apologies for the poor quality, but there it is, a barn owl.  Daylight hunting to feed her young.  She was a very long way off, so I was thrilled to get this photo of her.

Now that is what I call a wonderful country walk.

  6. Of course Harry spots those things in the grass--his eyes are much closer to the ground! Great shot of the owl and the damselfly. You do good work!

    1. Hello Ms Sparrow, Harry being closer to the ground is proving to be so useful! I must build upon his carrying skills, then he can take the camera bag for me..

  7. I remember when my children were small (and now my grandchildren) and they'd find the tiniest objects on the ground...oh to have that eyesight again! However, you didn't do too bad capturing that beautiful dragonfly and majestic barn owl. I love your country walk.
BTW...I just found a verse that is quite appropriate. It goes like this:
"Just because you wander doesn't mean you're lost!" Love you, Susan

    1. Hello Susan, I must find an old pair of glasses and store them in my camera bag...I keep forgetting to take spectacles with me, which renders me almost blind when it comes to using the camera. It is those unexpected and wonderful gifts from nature which turn a nice country walk into something wonderful. I love the verse! xx

    1. Hello Evlyn, It is a particularly lovely blue, once we reached the small fish ponds there were lots of them hovering over the water. Beautiful little flashes of colour.

  10. How special to get a picture of an owl in flight. The damselfly is very pretty. I'm always happy to see a toad at home as I know they eat all kinds of bothersome insects.
