PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Sparky gets Sniffy & Hen Comes to Tea

Sparky, taking time to smell the flowers.
My giant poppies are a brief seasonal treat.
They are delicate.
When I spotted Sparky having a jolly good sniff I was - concerned.
I am happy to say the poppies survived Sparky's attention.
Unfortunately the wind and the rain took care of them later that day.
They were nice while they lasted.

This little red hen is the sole survivor of the original rescue hens.  She is an old girl now.  Throughout the time we had the gang of four she was always the quiet one.

She wasn't greedy, grumpy or gregarious, she just stayed in the background, feathers golden and glowing, always gorgeous, but aloof.

Now that she is without her old friends she has developed quite a character, or should I say, we now have the opportunity to fully appreciate her character and her habits.

She doesn't do early mornings, she likes a little lie-in.  Then she likes to go to bed nice and early, with a mug of cocoa and a couple of digestive biscuits to dunk and nibble as she watches Emmerdale Farm.

She doesn't like to be handled, or to take food from the hand...unless it is Harry who is doing it when she suddenly becomes compliant.

Her routine has developed into escaping from the Owl Wood twice a day.  Somehow she gets herself over the fence onto the old pew and then flutters heavily into the log store area.

Little Red Hen then comes through the vegetable garden, round to the patio and taps loudly on the kitchen door.  She will not be budged until she has had a tasty scrap or two, then she quite happily walks back and waits to be let into Owl Wood.

Scone is her treat of choice at teatime.

No doubt while Jonny is home her breakfast treat will be bacon scraps or cheese rinds.

    1. Hello Mrs Thrifty, Our girls were rescue hens and although they arrive looking terrible, they soon feathered up and began enjoying life. They really are such fun. I hope you get some.

    1. Hello Meggie, That shot of Sparky with the poppies was just one of those moments, I am so pleased I had the camera to hand. Little Red Hen makes me smile - she may have a tiny brain, but she knows what she wants.

    1. Hello Jane, By now Little Red Hen will be tucked up in bed with her hair in curlers - I'd better nip out with her cocoa!

  5. Your Little Red Hen reminds me of my crows that come by...and not just in the morning. Heckle, Jeckle, and Jake tap on my window hoping I have some old bread (I don't use preservatives) to throw them. Birds are quite fascinating and make a lovely balance in the garden--which by the way, yours is amazing. I love stopping by in hopes of seeing the scenery you photograph. It brightens my morning routine. Love you, Me

    1. Hello Susan, You are very kind. My garden is a bit higgledy piggledy because I like to keep plenty of areas for the wildlife - well, that is my story... and I am sticking to it!! That particular stretch of garden fills my heart with delight every time I look at it, and I don't quite know why! I am thrilled to bits that you enjoy it too. Isn't it marvellous that even wild birds can enjoy making contact. xx

  7. Animals are so interesting when you're down to the last one and watch it mellow into being the only one. Her sky isn't falling--and it may even be blue some days.

    1. Hello Joanne, You are completely right, that little hen does live under a blue sky - she has us trained to her timetable, she gets what she likes when she likes, and has no cares!

  8. I hope Little Red Hen can still keep accompanying you and Harry on your walks. Is she your only remaining chicken!

  9. Hello Ms Sparrow, Little Red Hen still enjoys her walks with us, we often have Toby, the two cats and the hen following us round. On wet days she doesn't bother, but otherwise she tags along quite happily. We are just debating about saving another batch from the pie factory(!) we are working out the logistics of housing them, etc. I'll keep you posted.

  11. Little Red Hen knows how to live life. I simply adore your yard (and much better now that I know you keep it wild for the wildlife).

    Keep it wild...

    1. Hello Janet, I really do keep areas wild, we have quite a number of toads and frogs who live in the garden and I like them to have some decent cover. I've just been over to your new blog - welcome back!

  13. This is a joy. We didn't have little red hens (with personality or without) where I grew up in NYC, and we don't have them in Sevilla. The Owl Wood, to me, is a little like Disneyland... without the rides.

    1. Hello Mitch, You do have Dudo and Moose - and they have big personalities. Disneyland without the rides (or the expense) ...describes it perfectly.
