PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Bennie Finds a Bed

Beautiful Bennie has a very comfortable bed, but she rarely sleeps in it.   She drifts around the house finding a cosy nook here, a comfortable corner there.   She is very adaptable.  I think part of it is so that livewire Sparky can't find her.

Yesterday she decided that my sewing project would make a great bed.

I knew you wouldn't mind ...

George is busy redecorating the Boot Room, everything is topsy turvy...  of course Bennie found somewhere to oversee the operation.

Last night I searched high and low for her ... eventually tracked her down to the 'smallest room in the house', where everything from the Boot Room has been plonked while we decorate.

Her smile says it all.

In order to get into this room she has learnt to open the latch door, she stands on a Lloyd Loom linen basket which is nearby, reaches over and clicks the latch open.    When she does this in the dark of an evening, when all is quiet it can get a little scary hearing the latch click out there - when you just know there is no-one there.

    1. Hello Meggie, Bennie is the quiet one, shy and diffident. I always rejoice when I see her character coming through.

  2. Hello Elaine:
Such feline ingenuity. Bennie is lovely and we should not at all mind, as we are sure that you do not, where she chose to make her bed. We have a very soft spot for all cats and miss our own greatly.

    1. Hello Jane and Lance, Now that she has learnt this new trick we keep hearing the latch click - which is a little disconcerting in the dark of the night, when I KNOW there is no one in that room! Then it dawns on me that it must be Bennie.

    1. Hello Amy, Sparky is the extrovert, noisy, demanding, Bennie is quiet and shy - but she obviously has lots going on in her head and is well able to work out how some things work. She is a lovely girl.

  5. Beautiful elegant Bennie....oh my girl what exotic eyes! The house is hers after all so I am sure she thinks she can make her bed where she pleases. I know about the latch business I do I do ...my daughter had a cat called Mario who was allergic to milk so the vet told us to give him natural yogurt. He loved it and was obsessed with it and ....he found out how to open the fridge door (oldish fridge). He'd jump on the latch and it would spring open lift out the yoghurts (he knew what the pack looked like) and he'd have a feast. In the end she had to tie the latch tight with a cord because he never closed the door behind him. He was such a loving chap. He disappeared one day when the circus was in town.

    keep well

    Amanda :-)

    1. Hello Amanda, Oh no, that is a shame - unless of course Mario's dream had been to run away with the circus. It is so interesting to watch how our two rescue girls are blossoming and enjoying their life with us. A good home, lots of food, all the mice and rats they can catch!

    1. Hello Joanne, I am keeping my fingers crossed that Bennie doesn't work out how to open the fridge door, it is a magnetic one and one of our previous cats, Ming, learnt to lie on his back and push the fridge door open. Bennie is a treasure.

  8. We have chld locks on our cupboard doors because Oscar HAS to open everything to take a look inside..I'm not showing him this post in case he thinks it's a challenge and takes on the front door.

    1. Hello Jane, Oscar sounds a very bright cat! I love the way they all develop their own characters and quirks, even the quiet ones like Bennie. Sparky is tiny and very vocal, whereas Bennie is big and has a tiny voice which she rarely uses. Sparks talks all the time... Bennie uses her eyes to talk.

    1. Hello Susan, These little balls of fur do find their way into our hearts, don't they. I know you had Bailey for many years, we've had these two for just about a year now - they have put some fun back into old Toby dog's life, as well as ours!

    1. Hello Ms Sparrow, Many thanks for introducing me to Jen Chandler, I have been over to say "Hello" and I am now following her blog - it looks just the kind of thing I enjoy reading. I often wonder what makes them try it in the first place, do they watch us and think "Aha!".

  15. Hello Elaine,

Ms. Sparrow pointed me in the direction of your beautiful blog! Your cats are beautiful! I understand: my big boy likes to park himself everywhere, including the dining room table or anything I'm currently trying to read!

    Nice to meet you! Cheers,
    Jen

    1. Hello Jen, It is so nice to meet you - and a big "Thank you" to Ms Sparrow too.

I love the way that cats always think that anything we are doing is for their benefit, naturally!! I have to be careful with Sparky, she has a naughty habit of nibbling the corners off papers and books.
