PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Candlesby

It looks a little like an old fashioned sweet shop, but this is the interior of the wonderful herb shop at Candlesby.

Just click to enlarge!

Herbs and spices, pot pourri, sweet treats and delights, star anise, cinnamon sticks..

Bunches of herbs hang from the rafters, the whole effect is a visual delight.

The gardens are packed with herbs of every imaginable variety, all beautifully tended.

If plants, herbs and spices are not your thing, perhaps you would like a glimpse of the welcoming committee.

    1. Hello Dom, Well, now I hope you will call in and visit them - they are closed on Mondays. The entrance is a tiny lych gate by the side of the house, not in the farmyard round the back...just go through the gate and knock on the back door, then enjoy exploring and sniffing.

  4. I agree with John. In an era when Tesco Express seems to be multiplying by the dozen, holding onto these lovely independent shops seem more and more important somehow. Your Candlesby one looks like a real treat. I think all shops should have similar welcoming parties!

    1. Hello Val, It is lovely to meet you, welcome! This little shop is a real treasure, the herb garden is the back garden to the owners house, the shop is an adjoining outbuilding. The whole thing is a delightful shopping experience.

  7. Hello...I agree with John. I enjoy the independent shops so much more than a big chain-store variety. I get a feeling of "welcome" when I can walk in and meet the owner. Lovely post....a place I would diffently find on my list of stops.

    1. Hello Meggie, You would adore this shop. There are no other shops around, it is set deep in farmland. It is a fabulous experience from the moment you enter through a tiny lych gate at the side of the house. You and I would spend a lot of time browsing the shop and examining the plants.

  9. Hello lovely Elaine. Thank you for stopping by the shop. Glad to meet another lover of autumn and all the magic it brings to our soul. I hope I didn't throw you off by capitalizing its name throughout my letter, but within its context the seasons are personified so I simply couldn't pass it up. ;)
Your header is adorable and your images a delight, especially the last in this post. Melted my heart because we miss our golden girl so much. The nose reminded me of her.
Now following your adventures and I've added you to my sidebar under Imaginative Storytellers to not miss a thing. ;)
    Have a beautiful weekend.
    Much love,
    Marcia

    1. Hello Marcia, Welcome! It is such fun meeting new sisters - I am looking forward to seeing where the apron will lead you! Autumn colours, textures and smells are a delight, I love them. We didn't have much of a summer here, so I am hoping for a truly beautiful autumn. Time will tell. The dog at the herb shop is the sweetest natured girl you could wish to meet, those eyes say it all, never mind the tail! I hope you have a great weekend.

  18. What a delight! I'm finally managing to keep my herbs growing (can't say the same for my tomatoes and peppers). I love small shops like this and would spend the whole time obeying that sign "Please lift and smell the lids" by visiting every single one of those jars.

    1. Hello Amanda, It is Candlesby Herbs, in Candlesby. They have a website and they also sell on that well known auction site, county shows and farmers markets. A visit to the shop is a much more satisfying experience though, it is the kind of place where you want to linger. Next time you are over perhaps you'll be able to visit. It is closed on Mondays, and, even if the sign isn't out by the gate - just go on in and knock on the door - they will be open for business.

  22. What a delightful shop, wish we had one here instead of the big name centers that are so hard to find what you are looking for and harder to find good help or a welcoming committee.

    1. Hello Doc, It is so much more than a shop, it is a delightful experience. Modern shops have me wanting to get what I need and leave as quickly as possible, this one makes you want to linger and explore. Things get weighed out according to your requirements, none of this pre-packaged nonsense!

  23. What a wonderful shop. We have a food co-op that sells bulk herbs. Love to get my dried herbs there -- so much more fragrant and flavorful than the ones at the grocery store. And who wouldn't love that welcoming committee?
