PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Pester-Power and Shoes

I know that women have a reputation for collecting shoes,  designer shoes, pretty shoes, high-heeled shoes, dainty shoes, expensive shoes, crazy shoes.

Back in the 1950's, when I was a child,  we wore sandals in the summer months, good, sensible, leather sandals which came in a choice of brown, red or blue.  Almost everyone I knew wore them.  Most girls chose red, I preferred the blue ones,  because they came with a light cream coloured sole and I liked the contrast!

Some children wore plastic sandals.  How I yearned for plastic sandals.  We were not allowed to have them.  No argument.  That flat denial just made the longing all the more acute!

When I was 6 all the girls got beautiful glittery slippers but my heart was set

on something a bit different.  I was desperate for a pair of ballet shoes - I was the size of a baby elephant and I didn't do dancing... but I just knew that life would be different if I had ballet shoes...

I would become a princess.  I got the ballet shoes.  The only problem was that they were

black.  The ugliest shoes in the world.    I didn't try pester power for a long time after that!

Through the years I have worn lots of lovely shoes, plenty of ugly shoes, many unsuitable shoes.

Nowadays I stick to buying practical shoes and boots.

  1. I love to see a woman in high-heeled, strappy shoes. Super sexy! ;-)

They don't look so good on me though.

    1. Mmmn, they're pretty useless when you're trying to dig the vegetable garden, though. Practicality is all!

  2. It,s funny about shoes...it's like they have come full circle with me. As a child, I was wearing very sensible round-toed shoes. Gradually, as I became older, they became more like the shoes Chris likes to see on a woman. At the time, it didn't matter if the toes were forced into that tiny point. So now, I'm back to the sensible shoe. Occasionally, I do go a little crazy and wear a shoe out of the past.

    1. Meggie How on earth we have managed to wear and walk in some of the creations which have been in fashion I honestly don't know but, it was fun at the time! I suppose it is different when we wear them every day, we just get used to them. I still cling on to a few smart pairs, but generally I like them to be practical, especially out here.

    1. Great, which ones will you wear to the Tavern's 10th Anniversary Party? I'm in the middle of trying out the English Muffin recipe, cross your fingers for me.

  4. As children mom had each of us in Buster Brown's. For growing feet, you know. Her grandkids, however, she wanted in sneakers. "Instant carpet."

    1. Hi Joanne, Ah, the joys of being a grandparent, it's so much easier than when we are the Mama!

  5. I wore the navy blue shoes too..the plastic sandals were looked down on and I was never allowed any...I got my own back though...now I wear crocs as slippers. Everyday wear is wellies, snow boots, hiking boots, or gardening crocs...going off the property/going out is the highest heel I can get away with without falling over.

    1. Hi Jane, ... that would be flatties for me then! I can totter around in medium heels for a short spell, but I broke a toe or two last year and since then I can't wear even medium heels for long without being in pain, which is a real nuisance.

  6. I was a child of the early 70s and ended up wearing two-tone shoes for a while... Mine were blue and red, my best friend had green and yellow in the same style. I still love red shoes and always have a couple of pairs somewhere around!!! JX

    1. Hi Jan, Ah, two-tone shoes, that brings back memories. In amongst my collection of 'sensible' footwear I may well have a couple of red pairs, one pair being lace-ups - I love them! Thank goodness that sensible doesn't have to mean dull, these days.

    1. Hi Jaime, Thank you for stopping by and for your endorsement of sensible shoes! I love going barefoot, but only indoors, which is a shame really but this place is full of hazards. Sensible shoes can still be fun so I tend to buy them in pretty colours. My feet are very happy!

  8. This brought back memories! My mother wouldn't let me buy plastic shoes. And I used to love CLark's shoes back when they were still made in England.

    1. PS: I have very large feet and have always hated shoe-shopping!

    2. Hi Knatolee, It has been said that I should forget shoes and just buy the boxes... so you can guess where my feet fit in on the small/large scale! You have my heartfelt sympathy. When I find something I like (I don't look often) I buy them in two or three colours so I won't need to shop again for years.

  9. Growing up my footwear of choice was none. If I had to wear shoes (I vaguely remember a lot of patent leather mary janes), they came off as soon as possible. Growing up and having to buy my own shoes, I did have quite a collection of heels. Now it's short heels, flats and paddock boots. I still hang on to three pairs of quirky 4-inch heels. Now. living in an environment of grass burs, often brought inside by the dogs, barefoot is not often a choice.

    1. Hi Janet, Wow! Those 4-inch heels sound amazing. Even in my youth I wouldn't have been able to walk in them! Patent leather shoes, I had forgotten about them, I remember that I felt I was the bees-knees when I got a pair. Then there was my first pair of school shoes, I felt so grown up - I was five!

    2. I have them -- don't wear them. One of these days I'll let go and give them away.

  10. This is an interesting collection of shoes BUT my shoe collection is so small, two pairs of trainers, one pair of leather ankle boots, wellies and cosy slipper socks. How do people stand in those heels without tumbling?

    1. Hello cuby poet, Those shoes are just a crazy assortment garnered from the internet as examples of extremes in fashion. I love wearing my old sensible shoes and boots, I can walk for miles in them - and stay upright, which is a bonus for me as I have terrible balance. When I used to work in an office, in my younger days, I always wore high heeled court shoes, it took some time to get used to not wearing them. There's no going back for me now!
