PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

An English Country Cottage and Friday's Fences

Who could resist this lovely country cottage?

The fencing is typical Lincolnshire post and rail, simple, effective and beautiful as it sweeps around and down the drive.
It is plain and without frills, so is the substantial cottage.

I pass this place several times a week and I never tire of looking at it.
Normally the field contains beautiful Lincoln Red Cattle, sometimes half a dozen alpacas.

Don't worry, I am not driving around the country looking for a new place to live, it's just that some places make me go "aah!" and this is one of them.

I like the simplicity of style - which isn't to say that I don't like fancy places too -
and I also like the way the drive and the fence
curve on their way down to the house and beyond...
more of that in another post.

The cottage is located on the outer reaches of a village in a designated area of outstanding beauty.
Nearby is a nature reserve of ancient woodland.

The village is listed as having 9 dwellings in the Domesday Book and although that may have risen to 11 or 12 now - it's not many in almost a thousand years.
No doubt the population has decreased even though the number of houses has slightly increased.

I am happy to be linking in with Life According to Jan and Jer for Friday's Fences

  1. Hello Elaine:
Like you, the apparent simplicity of the architecture of this cottage appeals to us enormously. We rather like the four square appearance and the plainness of the brick. And, yes, the post and rail fencing is lovely and has that wonderful look of weathered oak although we suspect that it is more likely to be beech or something else.

    Kellemes hétvégét!

    1. Hello Jane and Lance,
I am so pleased you like the plain exterior too. In this area we are spoilt for choice. I hope to post some more at a later date - along with a few which are not to my taste but, of course, I shall not say which they are.

      Have a nice weekend!

  2. something calming about symetrical buildings.

  3. A very inviting cottage. The curving fence-line is most appealing. Red brick with white trim is always cozy.

  4. I'd love to have a look inside the cottage...is it's style true to it's period, is it country chic, is it ultra modern and minimalist,is it oriental? You are going to have to wangle a dinner invitation!

    1. Hello Jane, Now there's a thought - I wonder whether they would serve beef or alpaca... No, I have to decline that challenge!!

    1. Hello Meggie, It is so nicely tucked away off the country road we use that it should be very peaceful, with beautiful views. I can see you posted about half an hour ago, so I'll nip over asap.

    1. Hello Janet, I do seem to have a bit of a thing about curved fences at the moment! Next week I must try to find something different. Isn't that cottage beautiful!

  9. Nice and homely. You would need alpacas or cattle to keep all that grass down though.

    1. Hello Chris, I wonder if they would lend me an alpaca or two - the grass is far too soggy for the mower!

  10. Oh, dear, the person who has to know everything. Is the curving drive a public road? There seems to be another drive to the house. Or, does the curving drive access the rest of the lovely property.

    1. Hello Joanne, The cottage shares the drive with the farm traffic and the main farm house, but that is all. It is set back off a very quiet country road, and has terrific views. You get a gold star for observation!

  13. I'm surprised that you keep finding all these interesting fences week after week. I would be hard-pressed to find more than a couple that weren't chain link fences anywhere near me.

    1. Hello Ms Sparrow, It's a terrible job, but someone has to do it! It does mean that I have to keep watching out for suitable fences, hedges and walls which is then a great excuse for being the passenger rather than the driver...

  16. I love this house too! Have you been down to The Wartons farmhouse in Swaby? There is a footpath that runs by his house. There are two cottages on the walk that are very similar to this that are just so pretty.
