PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Eating Cake with Wesley

It has been raining here since Christmas...well, a slight exaggeration, but it feels as though it has.
It is cold, wet, miserable - even Toby doesn't fancy a walk.
So I feel free to spend some time doing what I want.

Drinking tea, eating cake.
I could have eaten a rich and gooey chocolate cake,    but  I settled for a slice of old fashioned treacle tart.  It contained next to no calories, because I  served it without cream.
(Dream on, Elaine!)
Now, eating cake and sipping tea is a wonderful occupation, but I feel there is something lacking...
I need a book, something to help me escape from the continual sound of rain, howling wind, gurgling and struggling downpipes and gutters, and
the steady drip of the leak in the conservatory...

Janet of Revising Life Blogspot very kindly recommended that I read "Wesley, the Story of a Remarkable Owl".

Janet knows of my interest in the owls around here and thought I may enjoy it.
It is the story of how a four-day-old baby barn owl with a nerve damaged wing is cared for by a biologist.
She cared for him, and loved him, for 19 years.

I have a feeling that it will all end in tears
and some of those will be mine.
.

Thank you for recommending it Janet, it is a wonderful book.

  1. That sounds like the perfect way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon. I'm just about to start the process of cooking a roast dinner. Hopefully it will stop raining soon and get a little warmer! Jx

  2. After years of reading Harry Potter reached for the treacle tart I finally looked up the ingredients. It sounds like pecan pie, sans pecans. I see I could eat either a lot on a cold, rainy day.

    1. Hello Joanne, I don't often make treacle tart, but next time I do I shall be sure to throw a handful of pecans in - I love pecan pie - and I shall think of you!

  3. Baking on a rainy day, what a wonderful pass-time! The book sounds nice but too many lovely animal stories end sadly. I haven't gone to see the movie "War Horse" because I know there will be horses killed. I don't want to see that! (Hugs to Arnold, may he live a long contented life.)

    1. Hello Ms Sparrow, I am absolutely with you on "War Horse" I couldn't even watch the trailers. I'll be visiting Arnold tomorrow so I will whisper your name and your good wishes to him as I give him a good hug. He is a darling.

  4. I'm so glad you are enjoying the book. I loved it because it (1)featured a barn owl-- I love their heart-shaped, white faces and had the pleasure of seeing them in the wild, (2)is a realistic look at a animals and the human connection (3)gave a interesting look at the biologists' world -- the black widow spider scientist was creepy and highly entertaining.

If it ever rains around here again, I'll join you in cake and tea.

  5. Hello my friend....I'm just full of questions today. Are the flowers from your garden? And what are they? What is the other item with the pearl beads?

    1. Hello Meggie, The flowers were a gift from Harry, he chose them himself (from the market) as a surprise gift for me. They are ranunculus, soft and delicate - Harry chose well. The green leaf with pearl beads is a pretty little napkin ring.

  6. Animal books always make me cry...except the veterinary textbooks I had to read when studying to be a rehabber...they made be gibber.

    1. Hi River, I wish I had known, I would have saved you a slice. I didn't eat any, but those who did said it was pretty good - well, they all came back for second helpings, so I count that as a success.
