PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

Dog Treat Recipe

My sincere thanks to Susan of My Mother's Apron Strings Blog, for sending me this beautiful apron.

I decided to bake some special treats for my new dog.    We do lots of little training sessions throughout the day,  we get through lots of treats.

My thanks also go to Jan.   She is a wonderful dog trainer who is coaching us both with great patience and expertise.

This is her recipe...

One tin of pichards/tuna/sardines
3 fresh eggs
plain flour
garlic/fresh chopped parsley

Drain the fish, break it up with a fork.
Add the eggs garlic/parsley and enough flour to make a fairly stiff paste.
Spread the paste out on a couple of greased baking sheets.
I bake them for 20/25 minutes at 180 degrees, or you could microwave them if you use microwaveable trays.

I usually use the pizza cutter to cut them up into hundreds of little cubes.    Toby Too adores them.

  1. Wow, what a stunning recipe, thanks Elaine. Lettice is in for a treat.

When I first had Lettice, the vet who saw her in her in the pitiful state she was in, said make her a casserole of vegetables and meat. Never give her anything you wouldn't eat yourself, added to which it's a fallacy that dogs need a lot of meat. So for the last fifteen years I've made her a casserole of turkey leg, chicken, shin of beef or free range pork, which ever was the best value at the time. The vegetables have always been celery and carrot and any other green veg on the go. She has never had to have her glands done, added to which our vet now says that her longevity after such an appalling start is in the main due to her diet.

    1. Hello LL, I often think of you and Lettice and wonder how she is getting on. As you know, Ian is a bit of a wag ...TT did not go to the vets, nor did he have his glands emptied. The more I read into what they make pet food from, the more determined I am not to use them for Toby Two. I think he would be delighted if I were to start him off on the casseroles - mind you, he would have to fight George for first dibs. x

    2. Elaine, it looks as if you have an Aga there, so it is no hassle to pop it in the slow oven. George I'm sure is well looked after.

Lettice by the way is fine; another good day, happy in the garden, her garden. She is very wobbly, but then so would I be at 115!

As an only child, I can't tell you how envious of you I am, having such a wacky bro. He really is a super star in my book, not least cos I reckon he's in touch with his feminine side. Why? Because my cheek he takes... well on the cheek, never seeming to get the arse, unlike other bloggers.

Enjoy Jonny's return, I'll be thinking of you.

    3. Hi LL, I am so glad to hear that she is still enjoying life and is able to enjoy her garden and the fresh air.

Owl is the baby of the family; we have an older brother, a slightly mad-professor-type. They are both brilliant in their own right.

Ian's language abilities developed very early on as he was brought up in Hong Kong with a Chinese nursery maid. He learnt to speak Cantonese before he could speak English, then he began translating one language to the other whenever necessary - all of this before the age of four. Amazing!

I have just been speaking to Jonny and Ming Ming, they will be setting out right about now - so tomorrow is the day!

Will definitely try Toby on casserole. I'll introduce it gradually because he tends to have a tricky tummy.
